According to IDC, global paper device shipments fell 12.3% year over year in the first quarter of 2022

NEEDHAM, Mass., June 1, 2022 – Global shipments of paper peripherals decreased 12.3% year-over-year to 22.4 million units in the first quarter of 2022 (1Q22). The value of shipments fell 10.6% year over year in the quarter to $9.7 billion, according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker . Manufacturing constraints and logistical issues continued to be the main causes of the market decline.

Notable highlights of the quarter include:

  • Supply chain issues, a shortage of semiconductors and soaring prices all contributed to the overall decline in the HCP market in 1Q22. The impact was broad with a year-over-year contraction in all regional markets in 1Q22. The Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China) (APeJC) region recorded the smallest year-over-year decline (-0.4%) due to strong demand from the consumer and commercial segments. Most countries have been able to reopen all economic sectors and have recovered slightly from the supply shortage.
  • Canon posted the best year-over-year growth among the top 4 HCPs, increasing unit shipments by 2.7% year-over-year to nearly 4.9 million units . The company’s expansion was spurred by double-digit gains in inkjet shipments, particularly in the sub-$100 price bracket.
